A water utility in Australia has recycled more than 600 laptops and created jobs for students in need, the Guardian reports.
Yarra Valley Water, which provides drinking water to more than a million people in Victoria state, has been working with Enable, a social enterprise, to get rid of 653 old laptops.
"By working with Enable, we could address e-waste, create jobs, and support people facing employment barriers at the same time," Pat McCafferty, managing director of Yarra Valley Water, says in a press release.
The laptops were donated to students in need through partnerships with organizations such as Banyule Enable also dismantled and recycled IT products, significantly cutting down on e-waste.
"It gives us progress doesn't happen overnight," McCafferty says.
