"The week we launched Block Club Chicago's Kickstarter campaign' before anyone really knew what Block Club could be Sue welcomed us with open arms," Stephanie Lulay, Block Club's executive editor and co-founder, says in a press release.
Sue Cross, the former CEO of the Institute for Nonprofit News, "is a proven leader who understands the immediacy of the local news crisis, and we're fortunate to have her on our board working for all of Chicago."
She's also a "trailblazing journalist," Lulay adds.
As CEO of the INN, Cross helped grow the nonprofit news sector from a few dozen newsrooms to nearly 500 news organizations supporting more than 4,000 journalists across North America, and funneled more than $13 million a year in philanthropy and investment to nonpartisan news outlets serving thousands of communities, the Chicago Tribune reports.
"The smart and scrappy way it serves individual Chicago neighborhoods brings more inclusive coverage to the whole city," Cross says in the press release.
Block Club, a Chicago-based nonprofit, was founded in 2018 by former DNAinfo Chicago editors and reporters after the award-winning site abruptly shuttered.
It was granted 501(c)3 status from the IRS last year.
