"India is rapidly becoming the energy growth center for the world."
That's how India's minister of petroleum and natural gas put it in a press release announcing the country's annual India Energy Week, which this year runs from Feb.
6 to 9 in Goa and is intended to "foster collaborative dialogues among experts, policymakers, and industry leaders," per a statement from the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.
The event is intended to showcase India's "commitment to sustainable growth and environmental stewardship," with Prime Minister Narendra Modi noting the country is "not just acknowledging this responsibility but embracing it with ambitious plans for a sustainable, greener future."
India is the third-largest energy consumer in the world, per the release, and Modi's government has set ambitious goals to reduce its carbon emissions by less than 45% by 2030 and to get to 50% of its energy needs from renewable sources by 2030, Quartz reports.
The Guardian reports India's pledge to get to net-zero carbon emissions by 2070 aligns with the country's vision to reach net-zero by 2070 and "address the urgent need for collective efforts to combat climate change."
