"We need to think about every boat that sinks in the Mediterranean, why people will leave their homes and families and go on a journey to nowhere."
That was the message from Ibukun Awosika, a Nigerian entrepreneur and newly appointed vice-chair of the Global Steering Group for Impact Investment, at the GSG Global Impact Summit in Spain on Monday.
Awosika warned that until the world's economic model is transformed, people will continue to flee Africa on small boats, the Guardian reports.
"We need to think about every boat that sinks in the Mediterranean, why people will leave their homes and families and go on a journey to nowhere," she said.
"Never have we had the boldness or courage to put the money there," she added.
"The rules that are applied right now cannot solve the problems," she said.
"We need new rules.
We need deliberate action."
Awosika said the world's capital needs to be invested differently in order to transform more lives.
