But they can be tough to run, with a high failure rate.
So researchers set out to find out what social enterprises can do to succeed, and what they found was that strategic planning, strong networks, and improving their internal processes and structures were key, according to a study published in the Journal of Social Policy.
"They need to pursue a social motive while also trying to remain sustainable with little funding," the study's lead author tells the Atlantic.
"This often means that they need structures, processes, and leadership acumen for both their operational success and sustainability."
