The co-founder of the deep-sea exploration company whose submersible imploded near the Titanic yesterday, killing its pilot and four others, says his friend was "very diligent in managing risk and well aware of the dangers of operating in a deep ocean environment."
Guillermo S ? 'hnlein, an Argentine-born entrepreneur who founded OceanGate Expeditions with pilot Christopher Rush before leaving the company in 2013, says he was not involved in the design of the Titan submersible but denies that his friend was acting recklessly, reports the Times of London.
"I think they asked him about a similar risk and he said, 'Look, if something happens at that depth, it will be catastrophic in a matter of microseconds,'" S ? 'hnlein says.
"To the point where the implosion occurs at almost supersonic speeds and he would basically be dead before his brain could even process that something was wrong,'" he adds.
Rush "was extremely committed to security," S ? 'hnlein says.
"He was also very diligent in managing risk and well aware of the dangers of operating in a deep ocean environment.
That is one of the main reasons why I agreed to go into business with him in 2009," S ? 'hnlein says.
