When it comes to combating climate change, food security, and mental wellness, Hong Kong's rural areas "house most of the sustainability capitals that are essential for today's global challenges, including climate change, food security as well as mental wellness and overall well-being of society," says Ming Wen, dean of social sciences at the University of Hong Kong.
To that end, HKU recently hosted a regional forum on "Bridging Knowledge and Action: the Roles of the University in Rural Revitalization," which brought together more than 230 participants from across the Asia-Pacific region to share their experiences and insights on how universities can play a critical role in rural revitalization in cities, the Hong Kong Free Press reports.
The forum included three keynote dialogues on " 1) rural development and climate change, 2) urban-rural integration in China, and 3) creating future leaders," according to HKU.
"In addition accumulating and transmitting knowledge from the academic perspective, Universities play a key role as a cradle for nurturing future leaders in countryside conservation and environmental protection," says Tang Man, head of the Countryside Conservation Office of Hong Kong's government.
