India's northeast has long been considered one of the country's poorest regions, with a literacy rate of just 63%, Quartz reports.
And that's about to change.
According to the North East Leaders Connect (NELC), a forum for young leaders in the region, the illiteracy rate in the region is expected to rise to 90% by 2030, making it one of the world's most under-served regions.
"We rarely take into account what we have contributed to the nation," Manipur's chief minister, Thounaojam Basanta Kumar, told the forum, per Quartz.
"I wish to change that mindset."
To that end, NELC has launched Project NEW (NERC World), a skill mapping database for unemployed young people in the region.
The project aims to create a database of the skill aspirations of young people in the North East, so that governments, businesses, and other organizations can better understand their needs and work together to help them achieve their goals.
The forum, which began last week in Imphal, is intended to "unify young change makers and leaders from the region to share their ideas and experiences; in order to visualize where they would like to see North East vis-a-vis India in the future," per
