India's government has come up with what it says is a first-of-its-kind fellowship for young people who have an idea for solving community problems.
The year-long Community Innovator Fellowship is being offered by the government-run National Institute of Technology, Aayog and the United Nations Development Program, Quartz reports.
The idea behind the fellowship is to encourage young people in remote areas of India to come up with solutions to some of the country's biggest problems, such as poverty, hunger, and disease.
"This is an ingenious way to engage the young change makers as well as various other stakeholders in the community innovation ecosystem," NITI Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant said at the launch of the fellowship last week, per the Times of India.
Contenders will get a chance to work on their idea at one of 12 Atal Community Innovation Centers (ACICs) across India, where they'll get support and resources to get their idea off the ground, Quartz notes.
"The ACICs would nurture youth-led innovations by providing suitable resources in terms of operating facilities, co-working space, maker labs, and a dynamic business network to the innovator," the NITI Aayog said in a statement.
