A former beauty queen in Nigeria is trying to change that.
Tomi Salami, who was crowned 2012's Miss Tourism Nigeria, has founded the Aurora International Charity Foundation, which aims to raise environmental awareness in the country and across Africa.
The foundation's latest project,Catch Them Young: Environmental Awareness Convention 2024, was launched Thursday in Lagos and will target high school students in the state.
Salami tells Premium Times that she wants to "establish children as young Environmental Ambassadors for their various communities."
The idea is to get young people thinking about the effects of pollution, resource depletion, and climate change.
"We strongly believe that pioneering an environmentally conscious foundation for children early in life will bring about far-reaching success that will spread further and last longer, thus establishing children as young Environmental Ambassadors for their various communities," Salami says.
She adds: "We must engage in activities that creatively and succinctly educate and inspire citizens to become environmentally conscious, fostering a sense of responsibility to our planet."
