It's not every day that a woman of color is named America's Most Intriguing Woman, but that's exactly what April Richardson did.
Richardson, who is black, is the founder and president of DC Sweet Potato Cake, a sweet potato cake bakery in Washington, DC, and Baked in Baltimore, a bakery in Baltimore.
She's also worked as a foreclosure attorney and spent pro bono hours defending homeowners and business owners from fraud, Fast Company reports.
"There are lots risks when it comes to being an entrepreneur in the food industry, but there's also a wealth of opportunities," Richardson says.
"Her ventures grew rapidly, with products gracing the shelves of retailers like Wegmans and Starbucks, and the opening of Baked in Baltimore in 2017 and DC Sweet Potato Cake Bakery in Washington."
But she's also focused on addressing food deserts and creating opportunities for marginalized communities.
"I've always to be my personal best and to write my own ticket to success," Richardson tells Fast Company.
"But to do that, I threw balance out the window."
