When Tristram Stuart started Toast Ale two years ago, he wanted to use the leftover bread from local bakeries to make his beers.
Since then, the social enterprise has worked with 86 breweries around the world to use the bread in their brewing, and now it's raised $2 million from investors, including Heineken, the National Geographic Society, and Paul Polman, CEO of sustainable business-leader Paul Polman, Beer Today reports.
All profits from Toast's beers go to charities working to reduce food waste.
"We set out with a mission to brew great beers and spread big ideas that can change the world," says Louisa Ziane, co-founder and chief operating officer at Toast.
"We're excited to be able to scale our work to support bakeries and breweries to embrace the circular economy."
