April Tam Smith, 38, is a managing director at a global investment bank who also happens to be an unusual philanthropist.
She and her husband, Graham, have given away 90% of the money they've made since opening the vegan restaurant in New York City's Times Square in 2017, and they plan to do the same for the rest of their lives.
Smith says the idea for P.S.Kitchen came to her while she was volunteering in South Africa in the early 2010s.
After she and Graham met at a Bible study, they committed to giving away 90% of what they made for a period of five years, "reverse tithing," in which they gave away 90% of what they earned.
"Kindness, P.S. Grace, and tithing. That's part of our love story," Smith tells the Washington Post.
Since opening, more than 100 people have gotten jobs at P.S.Kitchen, including victims of domestic violence, the recently incarcerated, and the homeless.
They've also helped build four schools in war-zone areas of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
